Granite Specifications

Granite is one of the most durable and attractive of all natural stones. It is quarried in many countries across the World and consists of quartz, feldspar and mica; during formation it cooled very slowly which results in it being second only to diamonds in its hardness. Due to its resistance to flaking, scratching and scorching, granite is the number one choice in natural stone for contemporary floor coverings, wall tiling, kitchen worktops, bathrooms, wet rooms and commercial applications. Available in a wide range of surface finishes to suit the project brief, granite will add elegance to any room or space. We recommend sealing the surface to ensure that it remains in pristine condition.

The following technical information may be of interest to Architects, Interior designers and Specifiers; the product weights and Physical property tests refer to the three types of granite that form the core of our product range.

Surface Finishes

Polished

High Gloss, ultra-smooth finish most usually associated with indoor use. Ideal for products such as Floor tiles, Kitchen worktops, Window cills and Mantles. Caution: This finish can be slippery when wet.

Flamed & Brushed

The surface of the stone is firstly Flamed and then repeatedly wire brushed to create a textured 'well worn', or aged surface. This finish is also known as Leathered.

Water Jet

A high pressure water jet is used on the surface of the stone leaving it with a very fine textured finish. This finish is specified where the client requires a quality surface with some “anti-slip” properties.

Honed

Satin sheen, ultra-smooth finish usually associated with indoor stone tiles. Caution: This finish can be slippery when wet.

Flamed

The surface of the stone is heated with a bare flame resulting in an even, moderately textured surface offering excellent anti-slip properties. This is the ideal finish for exterior paving slabs.

Bush Hammered

The surface of the stone is bush-hammered resulting in a uniform, coarse texture. This finish is the specifiers choice for high-traffic urban pedestrian environments.

Sand Blasted

Sand blasted under high pressure to achieve a uniform, light stippled surface. The resulting finish is moderately 'anti-slip' and indicated for use indoors on floor coverings.

Chiselled

Fine regular lines are etched into the surface of the stone leaving an attractive appearance with excellent anti-slip properties.

The weight of granite

Silver grey and Beige granite weigh 2700 kg per cubic meter.
Dark grey and Black granite weigh 2900 kg per cubic meter.

For example, a Silver grey paving slab measuring 40 cm x 40 cm x 2 cm thick would weigh 8.64 kg.
Calculation: 0.40 (width) x 0.40 (length) x 0.02 (thickness) = 0.0032 cu. meters x 2700 kg = 8.64 kg
